Honoring a Fourth of July grand marshal

The family of the late Jim Fortier carries a banner in the Laconia Fourth of July parade honoring the longtime, prolific volunteer in the city of Laconia, who died in May 2020. Among his many pursuits, Fortier was president and a coach of Laconia Little League, a coach in the Lou Athanas Youth Basketball league, and coach of Lakes Region Youth Hockey. He was also an active Kiwanian, serving two terms as president and being named Kiwanian of the Year in 1985, 1993, and 1999. He also held leadership roles with the Laconia 4th of July Committee, Parents and Children Together (PACT), Key Club, Multicultural Festival, President of LHS Band Boosters and the LHS Athletic Booster Club. And in his spare time he managed to run Jim’s Auto Repair. For those reasons and more, said parade organizer Tony Felch, Fortier seemed a nature choice to be selected posthumously as the parade’s Grand Marshal. (Courtesy photo)
